Vyctor Frahnknshtyne, in my book “Vyctor,” is a brilliant, young inventor attending college at L’institute technologie. This unique institution is charged with nurturing the minds of Travaille’s greatest inventing talents so that they can conceive of the improvements that those who govern the city/state (the immortal Shepherds), can decide when and how these wonders will be used (and by whom).
Vyctor’s brilliance is such, that he believes all problems can be solved by invention. The problem is that not all areas of research and invention are allowed in a culture that meters out improvements as an act of governance.
Vyctor’s Metal Man is one such creation. Oh, there is a great deal that will be catalyzed by the making of this invention. No harm in a little sneak peek.
I have been a steampunk artist for decades. The world that the story takes place within is, by definition, steampunk. Retro-futurism set in a Victorian/steam-powered setting.
The Metal M
an is absolutely a creation borne of that strange mixture of unexpected technology and the morals and nature of Victorian society.
I have always been in awe of the art that was put into functional even industrial machines of the age. Artful details, etching, hand painted decoration, were common in objects and devices that today, would be unadorned.
In creating Vyctor, It felt natural that his perfectionism would also compel him to bring as much art, as science, and industry to his work.
Besides writing and art, I myself am a trained industrial designer, and I hold nearly twenty patents. I guess the old adage “write what you know,” is good advice and inevitable.
